[Class 106 (ii)] The machine proper is supported on or formed with a base which affords support for a plurality of additional work supporting units each adjustable in height and carrying a workpiece supporting member which is pivotally mounted and mechanically adjustable with respect to said unit and adapted to support either the work-piece or additional work-piece supporting members. A framing 2 mounted on supports 3 has longitudinal runways 4, 5, 6 of which the runways 4, 5 support the traversible carriage 7 on which is mounted the hardness testing machine 8 while the runways 5 and 6 support the traversible carriages 9 of two work supporting units, one on each side of the machine 8. The carriages may be secured in a set position. Each work supporting unit comprises a screwthreaded pillar 10 adjustable vertically by a hand wheel 13 and carrying a head 12. The testing machine 8 of any well-known form is supported on a platform 16 mounted on wheels 17 and may be traversed over the carriage 7 at right-angles to the runways 4, 5. Each head 12 is provided with a pivoted arm 20 adjustable in inclination by a screw 22. A work piece 24 may be supported on the pillar 14 and on one unit or by both units, or as shown by seams 27 notched to engage over beams 26 notched in turn to engage over the arms 20 of the units. In a modification the testing machine and work supporting units are all fixedly mounted on the base. In the example described, the work piece is cylindrical and is carried on pairs of rollers supported on beams supported in turn on the units.
