463,814. Open fireplaces. CONNOR, A. C. H. Nov. 29, 1935, No. 33186. [Class 126] In an open fireplace in which, to permit the establishment of a down-draught through the fire when desired, there is provided, in addition to the usual front flue, a damper-controlled back flue 4 extending between the ashpit and the chimney, the fireclay fire-back 1 is cast on its rear side with two vertical ribs 2, 3 which, when the back is set in position in a chimney recess, form the back flue 4. The upper edges of the ribs 2, 3 are formed with grooves 8 to receive a frame in which slides a damper of such size that, when fully pushed in, it completely closes the flue 4. Instead of a single damper, two separate dampers for the front and back flues may be provided, these dampers being preferably interconnected so that they operate simultaneously in opposite senses.
