Abstract

463,740. Charging batteries. CHANCE BROS. & CO., Ltd., and HALLETT, L. B. H. Nov. 12, 1935, No. 31252. [Class 38 (iv)] Systems in which two or more dynamos driven from a common prime mover each charge a battery, are so controlled that each battery when fully charged is supplied at a reduced charging rate while the prime mover is stopped when all the batteries are charged. The dynamos Gl, G2 charge batteries J1, J2 respectively, each dynamo having a shunt field pf, pf2 in series with resistances r, r2 which are short - circuited during normal charging by switches e2, h2. On closing temporarily pushbutton switch ps, relay A is energized from battery J1 and operates (1) switches a6, a3, so that both batteries supply current to the dynamos for starting an engine ; (2) switch a2 whereby fuel and choke relays sv, sc and voltage responsive relay D are operated ; (3) switch a1 providing a holding circuit for relay A ; and (4) switch a4 operating voltage responsive relay F. Should the engine not start promptly, thermal relay C opens switch c1 and de-energizes relay A thus cutting off the supply of current to the dynamos. When battery J1 becomes fully charged before the other, voltage relay D closes contact d<1> whereby relay E is energized and in turn closes maintaining switch e1, opens switch e3 and switch e2 thus inserting resistance r in field circuit of dynamo G1 and reducing the charging rate. Similarly, when battery J2 is fully charged first, voltage relay F operates switch S1 in-circuit of relay H whereby switches h1, h2, h3 are operated. When both batteries are charged, switches e3 and h3 are both closed so that relay A is de-energized and the engine driving the dynamos is stopped. Specification 430,791 is referred to.
