[Class 78 (iii)] A garage vehicle-lift, which necessitates little or no excavation, comprises four posts 1 connected by tie-bars near ground level and by cross-bars 7 near their upper ends. Fluid - pressure cylinders 9 acting in conjunction with rods 13 form the longitudinal tie-rods between the upper ends of the posts. Fluid - pressure admitted by pipe 30 forces the pistons 14 out of these cylinders, thus moving the cross-heads 16 on the rods 13 which act as guides. Four ropes 18, 19 are connected at one end to the cross-heads, two of which, 18, pass over pulleys 22 at the heads of the posts and straight down to the corners of the platform. The other two ropes 19 pass over companion pulleys 25 on the same posts, and thence back to pulleys 27 on the other posts before passing down to the other two corners of the platform. To equalize the lift on the four corners, the two pulleys 27 are fixed on a common shaft and the ropes are given one and a quarter turns round them to prevent slipping. In modified constructions, the platform may be guided on the posts, or a single hydraulic cylinder may be used to revolve a shaft by means of a rope, the shaft carrying drums from which ropes pass to the corners of the platform. Compressed air, oil, or the like may be used in the cylinders.
