Abstract

461,774. Grinding and polishing lenses. STEVENS, A. H. (Bausch & Lomb Optical Co.) Feb. 13, 1936, No. 4393. [Class 60] A lens L is ground or polished by rotating it and an abrading tool 13 at substantially the same speed in contact with one another, the lens and tool having substantially the same diameter and being arranged as shown so that the edge of the tool passes substantially over the centre of the lens. In the course of each revolution substantially the entire area of the lens contacts with the tool, and the entire area of the tool with the lens, and practically uniform wear of the tool is secured. The lens and tool may rotate in the same or opposite directions. To avoid the formation of a central high spot on the lens, the edge of the tool is positioned slightly over the lens centre, or alternatively the tool spindle 14 may be slightly oscillated.
