Abstract

461,603. Ventilating vehicles. METZGER, K. July 20, 1936, No. 20097. [Class 137] [Also in Group XXVI] A motor vehicle is provided with an air conditioning system in which the direction of the air flow may be reversed and the air pump used either for withdrawing air from the interior or for operating a vacuum cleaning device. A centrifugal air fan 1 is driven by an electric motor 2, which may be the electric generator driven from the engine by a pulley 3, and the direction of the air flow is controlled by valves 11, 12 operated by a control 16 from the dash-board. The air may be forced through the conditioning units 20, 21, 22 for cooling, moistening, cleaning, ozonizing or the like before discharge into the vehicle through a conduit 18. Alternatively, the air may be withdrawn from the car through a conduit 17. A dust bag 51 in a casing 50 may be connected to the tube 17 when a vacuum cleaning tube 37 with the usual attachments is inserted into the conduit 18, after taking off the tray 38 which is used as an ash tray, when air is withdrawn from the interior. A sieve 36 may be provided in the tube 18. A two-stage centrifugal fan is formed with a casing of cup-shaped members 23, 24 between which is secured a member 28 from which is supported a ball bearing 30 in which one end of a shaft 26 rotates. Secured to the shaft are two fans 27, 32, the former drawing air from an inlet 34 and the latter forcing the air into a duct 33. The air fan or pump may be used for pumping water, or for spraying the car for cleaning purposes, or for pumping up the tyres. The air heating means may be a coiled tube located near the heated parts of the engine and filled with steel chips.
