Abstract

461,147. Delivering measured quantities of liquids. CLAYTON, J. Aug. 31, 1935, No. 24346. [Class 106 (v)] Apparatus for delivering measured quantities of liquids comprises a measuring chamber formed by a transparent member 1 clamped between upper and lower end caps 2, 3 having respectively a liquid inlet passage 2d and an outlet passage 3e adapted to be alternately opened by closure members carried in spaced relation on an operating spindle 10, 10a capable of endwise movement and extending through the measuring chamber and the lower passage 3e, means to permit the egress of air when the chamber is being filled and means to permit the ingress of air as the chamber is discharged. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the upper cap 2 is held by a clamp 20 and is formed with a seating 2f for a cork 8 adapted to form a closure between an inverted bottle and an outer tube 7 within which is the liquid inlet tube 6. The space between the tubes 6 and 7 forms the air passage. The air inlet to the chamber comprises passages 11, 11a controlled by a ball valve 12 adapted to be opened by a rod 12a which is engaged by a flange 10c on the liquid inlet valve 10b. The lower cap 3 has depending outer and inner bosses 3c, 3d between which is a tubular sleeve 13 secured to the valve spindle for longitudinal movement therewith by means of a shoulder 10j and a nut 15. A screw 16 passes through the outer boss and into a helical groove 13b in the sleeve 13 so that as the handle 17 is turned the valve spindle is raised or lowered. On the raising of the valves the inlet valve is first closed and then the liquid is discharged through the lower end of the valve spindle by way of radial passages 10f and a longitudinal bore 10h. Dripping after discharge is prevented by a hole 18 and a channel 19 which connect the bore 10h with the space beneath the inner boss 3d so that as the outlet valve closes the residue drop of liquid is drawn into this space by the suction caused by the increasing space between the bosses and above the sleeve 13. In modified forms, the sleeve is raised against the action of a spring either bv a lever engaging a pin projecting from the sleeve or by a toothed quadrant engaging a rack formed on the sleeve. A glass tube may be fitted around the spindle 10 to alter the capacity of the measuring chamber. In another modification, Figs. 9 and 11, the sleeve is dispensed with. the cap 3 is formed with a discharge nozzle 35 and the lower end of the spindle 10 terminates in a ball joint connection 32 with a closure means 33 having a supplementary closure 34. The spindle includes a block 36 with diametrically opposed V-shaped edges which slide in grooves provided in the walls of the extension 2c of the cap 2 and is operated by a rod 39 projecting laterally from a rotatable spindle 40 which is provided with a groove 44 adapted to register with an air inlet 45 in the discharge position of the valve spindle. In order to ensure the closing of the inlet before the opening of the outlet and vice versa, the upper end of the spindle 10 is provided with an enlargement 48, Fig. 12, working within a transverse aperture 49 in the block 36 so as to provide a lost motion connection between the two closure members 10b and 33. The device may carry an advertising plate 21.
