Abstract

461,088. Tunnel kilns. GIBBONS BROS., Ltd., and GIBBONS, W. E. Sept. 11, 1935, No. 25301. [Class 51 (ii)] In a double-track counterflow tunnel kiln of the kind in which heat interchange between outgoing and incoming goods is assisted by forced circulation of the tunnel atmosphere, the atmosphere is withdrawn by a fan 16 through ports 11 and side wall passages 13 adjacent the incoming goods 5, passes through conduits 15, 18 disposed above the roof of the kiln, and finally returned through wall passages 20 to ports 21 opening into the kiln adjacent the outgoing goods 6. The side wall passages 13, 20 deliver at their upper ends into headers 14, 19 respectively with which the conduits 15, 18 communicate. The heat interchange is further assisted by internal propeller fans 22, Fig. 3, mounted in the roof of the kiln at the ends of the central heating zone, these fans serving to produce a downward flow of the tunnel atmosphere in the central longitudinal plane of the kiln and an upward flow at the sides thereof.
