Abstract
Textile materials such as cotton, linen, wool, and artificial silk are rendered waterproof by treatment with a chlorocarbonic ester of an alcohol containing at least 4 carbon atoms. Suitable esters are those of butyl, amyl, hexyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, octyl, dodecyl, myristyl, cetyl, octodecyl or oleyl alcohols, octodecandiol, montanol or alcohols obtainable by the oxidation of high molecular aliphatic hydrocarbons. The compounds may contain halogen, hydroxy, ether, ester or nitro groups. They may be dissolved or dispersed in water or organic solvents, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, benzine, benzene, or tetrahydronaphthalene. Hydrochloric acid formed during the reaction of the ester with the textile may be neutralized by addition of ammonia, amines, pyridine or sodium carbonate. The treatment is preferably effected at temperatures between 50 and 100 DEG C., followed by drying at temperatures up to 100 DEG C.
