Abstract

460,523. Compound fabrics. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. July 29, 1935, No. 21464. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1934. [Class 140] A stiffened compound fabric suitable for wearing-apparel e.g. for collars, cuffs, and fronts of shirts, hats and parts thereof, and garment linings is made by uniting under heat and pressure the components of an assembly comprising a textile fabric, consisting substantially of non-thermoplastic material, coated or impregnated with cellulose acetate or other thermoplastic cellulose derivative applied in finely divided form, and two outer layers of untreated fabric composed substantially of non-thermoplastic material. The cellulose derivative may be powdered by grinding in a ball or pebble mill in the presence of water or other liquid, or by passing with water or other liquid and, if desired, a plasticizer, such as dimethyl or diethyl phthalate or dibutyl tartrate through a colloid mill having closely fitted rotors one or both of which is provided with an abrasive surface e.g. of carborundum, and may be applied as a suspension e.g. in water, or as a dry powder. Adhesives such as gelatin, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, &c. or latex may be incorporated with the finely divided cellulose derivative. Woven, knitted, netted &c. fabrics of cotton, linen, wool, silk, regenerated cellulose &c. with or without thermoplastic cellulose derivative yarns may.be used. In examples two or three lavers of cotton or linen fabric are assembled and hot-pressed with one or two intermediate layers coated or impregnated with powdered or finely divided cellulose acetate. The fabric layers may be cut to shape and/or sewn together before hot-pressing. A volatile solvent or latent solvent such as acetone, ethyl lactate, formal glycerol, ethyl and/or methyl alcohol, or methyl glycol, preferably diluted with water may be present during hot-pressing. The latent solvent e.g. aqueous alcohol may contain a plasticizer in solution. The pressure surfaces or rollers, one or both of which may be heated, may be embossed with designs, stripes, dots &c. to give local adhesion. In an example cellulose acetate, dimethyl phthalate, gum tragacanth, and water are passed through a colloid mill having carborundum rotors, then treated in a ball or pebble mill, the resulting suspension being applied to a cotton fabric, and dried. The coated fabric and two untreated outer cotton fabrics are treated with aqueous ethyl alcohol and united by hot-pressing.
