[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] An arrangement for halving all the frequencies in a signal band having limit frequencies n, n<1> comprises a modulator M, the output terminals B of which are coupled to one of the inputs C through a filter S passing the band n/2 to n<1>/2 and an amplifier V. The half frequencies are taken off at B. Figs. 2 and 3 show suitable modulators formed from groups of dry rectifiers. These arrangements act in one direction as halvers and in the other as doublers so that a single piece of apparatus serves for compression and expansion. The band to be compressed may first be raised in frequency to make it more nearly the equivalent of a single frequency. Alternatively, bandwidth reduction may be performed separately on a number of sub-bands into which the main band is first divided. In multiplex carrier telegraphy the various signals may be brought closer together to form a band which is then compressed by a single apparatus of the kind described. Saturable rectifiers or other amplitude limiters may be included in the feed back circuit.
