Abstract
Seed disinfectants comprise, in conjunction with a diluent, an organo-mercury compound of the formula <FORM:0459318/VI/1> wherein R represents CCl3 or CBr3, R1 either hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radicle, R11 either hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicles which may form part of a ring, and Y a negative radicle such as acetoxy or halogen. The said mercury compounds are prepared according to Specification 459,462, [Group IV]. Diluents specified are finely-divided clay, chalk, talcum, kaolin and kieselguhr. Other fungicides, stimulating agents, compounds capable of increasing the adhesiveness and agents to prevent dusting may also be present in the compositions. A table is given showing the effect on Fusarium-infected seeds of compositions containing 98-99 parts of kaolin and 1-2 parts of the following mercury compounds of the above formula: a -trichloro-b -ethoxy (methoxy, isopropyloxy, n-butoxy or isoamyloxy)-b -acetoxymercuri-ethoxyethane, a -trichloro-b -methoxy-b -acetoxymercuri-cyclohexyloxyethane and -a trichloro - b - ethoxy - b - acetoxymercuri - isopropyloxyethane. The table also compares the effect of the above compositions with compositions containing known mercury compounds. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also refers to organo - mercury compounds of the above formula in which R represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicle such as an alkyl, aryl or alicyclic radicle, R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicle, such as an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alicyclic radicle, and in which the hydrogen atom shown in the formula is replaced by R1. These compounds may be prepared by reacting a mercury salt with an unsaturated organic compound having an ethylene linkage in the presence both of the diluent and of an organic oxo compound. Reference is also made to bromal-ethyl-acetomercuri-ethylacetal and chloral-ethyl-chloromercuri-propylacetal as constituents of the compositions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
