458,962. Ratchet gearing. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 17, 1936, No. 1573. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XVIII] Variable-ratio transmission mechanism particularly for gas, electricity, or water meters, comprises a continuously driven wheel 1 with a crank-pin 2 which oscillates a lever 4 carrying a toothed quadrant 5 against the action of a spring 3. The quadrant 5 oscillates a gear 6 integral with which is a bevel gear 7 carrying a one-way pawl 12 engaging with a ratchet wheel 14 on a driven member 8. The rotary oscillating movement of the bevel wheel 7 is conveyed in the opposite sense through an idler 11 to a second bevel wheel 9 which also carries a pawl 13 engaging a ratchet wheel 15 on the driven member 8. Thus, on movement of the oscillating lever in one direction, the pawl 12 drives, whilst on the return movement the pawl 13 drives. The amplitude of the oscillations of the lever 4 and hence the transmission ratio of the gearing is varied by the position of a stop 18 which limits the range of movement of the lever 4.
