Abstract

458,809. Hydraulic shock absorbers. DEUTSCH, F. A., 1, Konstanzer Strasse, Berlin. June 29, 1935, No. 18703. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect 91 of the Acts, Dec. 31, 1935.] [Class 108 (iii)] in an hydraulic shock-absorber of the reciprocating-piston type, the piston and cylinder form a self - contained shock - absorbing unit which is inserted into a housing forming a refill chamber communicating with the working chamber of the unit, one part, for example the piston, being fixed to the housing and carrying a device for regulating the escape of liquid from the working chamber. In the double-acting construction shown in Fig. 1, each piston 18 is fixed to a locknut 19 closing one end of the casing 1, and the sliding cylinder 11 is spring-pressed into contact with a pin 3 inserted in the operating shaft. A cup-leather 20 is pressed against the pistonface by a spring 21 which bears at its other end on. a radially and centrallybored de-aerating device 22 fixed on the piston-face and in communication with the other side of the piston through a conduit controlled by spring-separated ball-valves 23, 24, the main valve 24 being adjustably spring-pressed. The cylinder carries a. third spring-pressed relief valve 13. In operation, when the pin 3 moves anticlockwise into the position shown, the left-hand cylinder 11 slides to the right, fluid flowing through the valve 13 into the working chamber. On subsequent clockwise movement of the pin the fluid, together with any air, is forced by the cylinder through the radial bores 22a of the device 22, the central bore 22b, and past the valve 23, and when the pressure is sufficient, lifts the valve 24 and flows into the casing through a passage 31 and recess 32 in the piston. When the pressure ceases the ball 23 is first seated and the spring 23b silences the return movement of the ball 24 on the seat. Alternatively, the ball 23 may be dispensed with and the communicating channel leading to the valve 24 may be throttled or other means provided to silence the valve 24. A fluid-tight joint is formed where the end of the shaft 2 passes through the casing by means of an elastic ring deformed under spring-pressure to engage both the casing and a groove in the shaft. In a modification, Fig. 3, the ball-valve 24 is replaced by an adjustably spring-pressed, centrally-apertured, spherically-ended valve 33 with which cooperates a tapered pin 35, adjustable by a screw 36. Normally the fluid is throttled by the pin but on excessive pressure the valve 33 lifts and functions as a pressure-relief valve. A screen 37 may be inserted as shown to filter the fluid. Fig. 5 shows another construction of regulating valve in which the valve-carrier 25 is acted on bv weak and strong springs 26, 39 respectively, regulation of the spring 26 by a screw 27 enabling the valve 24 to be accurately adjusted. Shockabsorbers according to the invention when used on a vehicle may be interconnected in order to stabilize the vehicle. Specifications 364,308 and 392,202 are referred to.
