Abstract

458,710. Condensers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and FOOT, J. B. L., and JAMES, E. G., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. Dec. 18, 1935, No. 35095. [Class 38 (ii)] The mutual capacity between two electrodes 2, 9 is controlled by varying the size of the aperture in two earthed shields 4, 5, one inside the other, interposed between the electrodes. As shown, the inner electrode 2 is cylindrical and the outer 9 is of half-cylindrical form outside the shields and spaced from a casing 10 by insulators 11. The shields have apertures 7, 8 and the outer shield is rotatable on the inner by means of a spindle 6 to vary the effective aperture. Plates 18 may be fitted to the rotary shield 5 in cases where it is desirable to keep constant the capacity to earth of the conductor 9, whereby the decrease of the capacity to earth due to the opening of the aperture is compensated for by the smaller distance between the conductor 9 and the earthed plate 18.
