Abstract
458,579. Shock-absorbers. BARKER, G. G., 14, High Holborn, London.-(Bendix Aviation Corporation ; 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) April 17, 1935, No. 30645/36. Divided out of 456,897 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 28, 1935. [Class 108 (iii)] A shock strut, particu. larly for aeroplanes, comprises an upper member consisting of concentric cylinders 10, 34 the outer cylinder 10 being provided at its upper and lower ends with attachment means such as a bifurcated device 12 and lugs 28 respectively while a lower slidable cylinder 56 is guided between the cylinders 10, 34 by an apertured piston 36 on the cylinder 34 and by a closure device on the inner end of the cylinder 10 such as packing 18 contained between a nut 24 and a movable ring 22. On maximum extension of the strut the ring 22 is engaged by a collar 58 on the cylinder 56 and the packing is compressed. A metering pin 62 carried by the cylinder 56 co-operates with the aperture 44 in the piston 36 above which is mounted a snubbing chamber 46 having a non-return flap-valve 52 at its upper end and small openings 54 at its lower end. On compression of the device liquid is forced through che gradually-decreasing aperture 44, up through chamber 46 and past valve 52, and through holes 3S in cylinder 10 into the annular space between the cylinders 10, 34, compressing air or gas in the upper ends of the cylinders. On rebound, the valve 52 closes and liquid is forced by the compressed fluid through the openings 54 and 44 back into cylinder 56. Brace members may be secured to the lugs 28. In a modification the packing is movable with the cylinder 56 and again acts as a cushion at the end of the rebound movement when the end of a long, bending-resisting sleeve arranged inside the cylinder 10 engages a I, slidable, packing-retaining ring. In another modification the chamber 46 is omitted and I the flap-valve 52 mounted on a diaphragm fixed in the cylinder 10.
