Abstract

457,880. Filters. BELL BROS. (MANCHESTER 1927), Ltd., and BENSON, C. G., Calder Iron Works, Denton, near Manchester. April 29, 1935, No. 12710. [Class 46] A device for introducing air and wash water into a filter bed of sand, gravel, &c., for cleaning the bed comprises a pipe 3 fitted with inner and outer tubular stems 4, 5, flanged at their upper ends and with the stem 5 depending into the pipe. The flanges 6, 8, a perforated domed cover 10 and a distance piece 9 are secured together by rivets 12 but held apart by spacing washers 13. During filtration the filtrate passes through the perforations in the domed cover and through the spaces formed by the washers and is led away by the pipe 3. For cleansing, water and air under pressure are supplied to the pipe 3, the water passing up into the bed through the stem 5, while the air passes up the annular space between the stems and through the openings between the flanges. An imperforate disc may be used instead of the domed cover 10.
