Abstract

457,771. Valve generating circuits; directive wireless signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London, and CLOUGH, N. H., Axbrindon, Hill Road, Brentwood, Essex. May 31, 1935, No. 15927. [Class 40 (v)] An automatic signal-generator, particularly suitable for keying the overlapping or interlocking radio-beams used for navigation purposes, or for controlling road-traffic signs, comprises two cross-coupled valves 1, 2 arranged to have a very rapid change-over between two definite states of equilibrium, one having a different duration from the other. One state, for instance, is used to modulate a radio-beam with a morse " dot" and the other with a Morse " dash." The duration for the valve 1 is determined by the charging rate of the condenser 21 and resistance 19, and that for the valve 2 by condenser 22 and resistance 20. At a certain voltage the condenser 21 is discharged through a Neon lamp 23 which accelerates the changeover by applying a sharp pulse to the grid 10 of valve 1, whereupon the valve 2 comes into action until the discharge device 24 breaks down, and the cycle is repeated indefinitely. The changes of potential set up in the anode circuits of the valves 1, 2, are applied successively and in push-pull to two pentode valves which are used to modulate two overlapping radio beams. If gas-filled valves are used, the two anodes are connected by a condenser 31. A self-starting resistancecapacity combination 33, 32 and discharge device 34 may be inserted, as shown, to initiate operations. A pair of auxiliary valves may also be shunted across the two timing condensers 21, 22 and are automatically "triggered" to accelerate their discharge.
