[Class 146 (iii)] In a magazine pencil having a carrier tube 3 extending from an end knob 4 to the writing point and movable against the action of a spring, the tube gripping the lead 11 near the point of the pencil, there are provided in the tube a single slot 5 extending along three quarters of its length and a double slot 12 extending along the remainder of its length, and the resilient jaws 6, 7 formed by the double slot are bent outwards and each carry a small projecting rib 9, preferably pressed out of the jaw, adapted to engage the point of the pencil casing 1 whereby a strong grip on the lead is obtained.
