Abstract

Sodium octadecenoyloxyethane sulphonate is prepared by dissolving oxyethanesulphonate in aqueous pyridine, slowly adding excess of octadecenoyl chloride at low temperature, heating the mixture, adding excess of sodium carbonate, driving off the pyridine by means of steam, and salting out the desired compound. Sodium octadecenoylmethylaminoethanesulphonate is obtained similarly by using methylaminoethanesulphonate in place of oxyethanesulphonate. Sodium hexadecanolsulphomethanesulphonate is prepared by the reaction of methanedisulphoacid on hexadecanol in presence of sodium carbonate. Ammonium dodecylsulphamidoethanesulphonate is prepared by converting sodium dodecylsulphate into the sulphonate by boiling with sodium sulphite, treating the product with phosphorus pentachloride to give dodecylsulphochloride, reacting this with amino-ethanesulphonic acid in the presence of calcium carbonate, and converting the product into the ammonium salt in known manner. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 436,956, [Group III].ALSO:Cleansing composition for living mucous membranes, particularly those of the mouth and intestinal tract, are prepared by emulsifying paraffin, cod liver oil, or an equivalent intestinal lubricant, in water containing an alkali salt of an aliphatic sulphuric or sulphonic acid having from 12 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule, in the presence of a higher, straight chain aliphatic alcohol. The following sulphuric or sulphonic acid compounds are referred to, viz.: sodium hexadecanolsulphate, sodium dodecanol sulphate, sodium dodecylsulphonate, sodium octadecenoyloxyethanesulphonate, sodium octadecenoylmethylaminoethanesulphonate, sodium hexadecanolsulphomethanesulphonate, ammonium dodecylsulphamidoethanesulphonate. According to examples: (1) an aqueous emulsion to be taken by the mouth for treating the intestines contains sodium dodecylsulphonate or sodium hexadecanolsulphate, paraffin of M.P. 40 DEG C. or liquid paraffin, hexadecanol, and a small quantity of gelatine; (2) an aqueous paste for cleaning the throat and mouth contains sodium dodecanol sulphate, liquid paraffin, hexadecanol, and if desired calcium carbonate, Specification 266,746, [Class 81 (i)], is referred to. Sodium octadecenoyloxyethane sulphonate is prepared by dissolving oxyethane sulphonate in aqueous pyridine, slowly adding excess of octadecenoyl chloride at low temperature, heating the mixture, adding excess of sodium carbonate, driving off the pyridine by means of steam and salting out the desired compound. Sodium octadecenoylmethylaminoethanesulphonate is obtained similarly by using methylaminoethanesulphonate in place of oxyethane sulphonate. Sodium hexadecanolsulphomethanesulphonate is prepared by the reaction of methanedisulphoacid on hexadecanol in presence of sodium carbonate. Ammonium dodecylsulphamidoethanesulphonate is prepared by converting sodium dodecylsulphate into the sulphonate by boiling with sodium sulphite, treating the product with phosphorus pentachloride to give dodecylsulphochloride, reacting this with aminoethane sulphonic acid in the presence of calcium carbonate and converting the product into the ammonium salt in known manner. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of the salts of the sulpho acids either alone or with additions of antiseptics, glycerin, charcoal, chalk, purgatives, or paraffin and other lubricants; refers to the triethanolamine salts of the acids; states that the salts are preferably purified by solution in alcohol or acetone to remove inorganic impurities and by solution in benzine to remove water-insoluble substances; states that the preparations may be used as enemas; includes the use of vegetable gelatine in place of gelatine according to the first example given above; and includes additional examples according to which (1) a paste for cleaning the teeth consists of purified sodium dodecanolsulphate, or certain of the sulphonates mentioned above, mixed with glycerin, with or without addition of calcium carbonate and peppermint oil; (2) sodium dodecylsulphonate, or a thoroughly purified "ester salt," is used in aqueous solution as an enema. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 436,956, [Group III].
