[Class 87 (ii)] Relates to paste or dough rolling machines of the kind in which the dough is passed to and fro between reducing rollers, and consists in means for progressively reducing in an automatic manner the operative spacing of the reducing rollers between successive passages of the dough. The reducing rollers 1, 2 are connected by mangle gearing and the lower roller is provided with an operating handle 5, while the upper roller is mounted in verticallymovable bearings 3 controlled by weights 16 or springs tending to raise the roller 2. Each time the direction of rotation of the handle 5 is reversed, a shaft 21 carrying snail-form eccentrics is turned to depress the bearings 3 of the roller 2. In the position shown, if the handle 5 is rotated in an anticlockwise direction, a projection 37 will engage a spring-pressed lever 38 and thereby move a slide 34 to the right. A roller 40 on the slide acts on a cam-surface 41<a> of a spring-pressed lever 41 which is rocked, and through connections 42, 43 rocks a ratchet lever for turning the cam-shaft 21 and thereby reducing the space between the rollers 1, 2. When the direction of rotation of the handle 5 is reversed, the projection 37 acts on another spring-pressed lever 38 on the slide 34, whereby the slide is moved to the left into the position shown, and again rocks the lever 41 to operate the ratchet mechanism. A hand wheel may be provided on the shaft 21 for determining the initial setting of the rollers 1, 2. The snail cams on the shaft 21 are provided with low parts so that, after the minimum spacing of the rollers 1, 2 has been reached, the weights 16 raise the upper roller 2 clear of the dough. The mechanism may be used in conjunction with the arrangements described in Specification 457,334 for effecting the reversal of the paste carrying means and for ensuring that the means for carrying the paste from the reducing rollers travel at a greater rate than that of the means for feeding the paste to the rollers.
