Abstract

456,838. Directive wireless signalling. ATKINS, H. C., 207, Princes Gardens, West Acton, London. Feb. 11, 1935, Nos. 4321 and 24357. [Class 40 (v)] A landing-path for an aeroplane is formed by the intersection of two rotating beams from beacons A, B, Fig. 1, the elevation of the beams being simultaneously varied to give the curved track marked CD in Fig. 1A. Each beam is separately modulated at a constantlyvarying frequency, so as to give the aviator an indication both of his position and height. The modulation may be effected by means of gaseous discharge tubes placed in the path of the beam. The rotating beams may be replaced by stationary diverging beams, A, B, Fig. 3A, an additional beam RB being swung vertically up and down to indicate the landing track. The variously-modulated beams are separated out by filter circuits at the lowfrequency end of the receiver, the height and distance being shown on a frequency meter.
