Abstract

In a process for equalizing and smoothing the coating on a coated web, e.g. paper, by a pressure fluid directed against the web, pressure is exerted over the entire width of the web transversely of its direction of travel and at <PICT:0456746/IV/1> <PICT:0456746/IV/2> <PICT:0456746/IV/3> right angles to the plane of the web. Coating liquid from a vat 5 is applied to a web 3 travelling over a platform 1 by coating mechanism 4, e.g. brushes, rolls, or sprays, and is smoothed by fluid discharged under pressure from devices 6 fed by pipes 7, 8 from a compressor 11. The "air-knife" 6, Fig. 2, comprises an outer tube 13 provided with a longitudinal slit 15 defined by flanges 16 and an inner perforated tube 14 which is supplied with the pressure fluid from each end 7. The pressure in the tube 13 may be equalized by providing apertures 15<1>, Fig. 3, which progressively increase in area from the point of intersection of the fluid. Instead of the elongated slit 15, the fluid may be discharged through a series of perforations or discontinuous, inclined, or transversely disposed slits. The "air-knives" may be oscillated longitudinally in known manner. The pressure fluid may be air, heated or cooled or impregnated with a vapour such as alcohol and may be applied intermittently to the coating in making water marks on paper by varying the distribution of the coating. The process may be applied in making tinted paper directly on a paper making machine. Specification 12141/12, [Class 140], is referred to.
