Abstract

In the method of producing porous silica-lime stones by mixing kieselguhr, slaked lime and between 50 and 90 per cent water and hardening the mixture with steam under pressure, segregation is prevented during the shaping and hardening by providing that 1-5 per cent of the silica is present in solution. The soluble silica may be added as such, e.g. in the form of water glass, and/or it may be produced in situ, e.g. by additing caustic alkali. Thickening agents, e.g. dextrine or glue, may also be added in amount up to 4 per cent of the total dry content. Fillers, e.g. pumice, gravel, cork fragments and animal, mineral, or vegetable fibres such as pigs' hair, wood pulp, wood shavings, straw, reed tube, or asbestos, may also be added.
