G., 56, Newlands Avenue, Syke, both in Rochdale, ORMESHER, H., 164, Turncroft Lane, Stockport, and HARTLEY, W. T. D., Badsworth, Rochdale Old Road, Heywood, Lancashire. Aug. 10, 1935, No. 22591. [Class 5 (i)] Drained peel supported on an endless travelling belt is cut into pieces by reciprocating knives arranged to cut against the upper surface of the belt. The belt a carrying and supporting the peel against the cut passes over rolls a<1>, a<2> and is provided with tightening means a<3>. Guide plates b at the sides direct the peel to the middle of the belt. A ribbed canvas or other belt c arranged above the belt a passes round rolls c<1>, c<2>, the roll c<1> being provided with belt tightening means and the roll c<2> with means c<4> for adjusting the lower end of the belt with respect to the belt a. The peel passes below the belt c to a fluted feed roller d which has adjustable spring loading means d<1> and has at its far side a guide device e that is carried on brackets projecting from the bearings carrying the roller d ; this guide device strips the peel fiom the roller and keeps it flat as it proceeds towards the knives. The cutting means comprise a single transverse knife f and a series of longitudinally arranged dividing blades f<1> spaced across the width of the belt a. The knife f is held against the face of a cutter block g, Fig. 5, provided with slots and a key g<1> for the knives f<1>. The block is clamped adjustably to a slide h by bolts h<1>, the adjustment being effected by screws h<2>. The ends of the slide move in slotted guides h<4> on the machine frame and are provided with pins h<5> on which the upper ends of connecting rods i actuated by cranks i<2> are pivoted. A comb m, strips the knives f<1> of peel. Plates a4, a<5> prevent sagging of the belt a and a plate c5 supports the lower stretch of the belt c. A freely rotatable roller a<6> is situated below the belt a immediately under the roller d. The main shaft 1 has adjustable bearings 1<a> and drives the crank-shaft by a ground pulley and V-belt, the conveyers being driven through a chain of gearing including a worm 6, worm. wheel 7, bevels 8 and 9 and chain-wheel 10. The size of the pieces cut can be varied by removing some of the blocks f<1> or by replacing the cutter block with one having differently spaced blades, also the speed of travel of the conveyer may be altered to vary the distance between the transverse cuts.
