Abstract

Esters of higher fatty acids and polyhydric alcohols containing at least one unsubstituted hydroxy group are treated, e.g. by oxidation or polymerization, to introduce further hydrophile groups. This may be done either before or after the synthesis of the esters and in the former case there may be an intermediate purification process. For example, sunflower seed oil is blown with air at 175 DEG C. until its viscosity is doubled. The oxidized oil is saponofied and the fatty acids isolated. These are then esterified with a large excess of anhydrous glycerine at 180 DEG C. using potassium soap as catalyst.ALSO:Agents for stabilizing aqueous emulsions or suspensions and increasing their hydrophilic capacity comprise esters of higher fatty acids and polyhydric alcohols having at least one unsubstituted hydroxy group, into which additional hydrophile groups have been introduced, e.g. by oxidation or polymerization. The said additional groups may be introduced either before or after the synthesis of the esters and in the former case the substances may undergo an intermediate purification before being esterified. According to an example sunflower seed oil is heated to 175 DEG C, and air is blown through until its viscosity is doubled. The oxidized oil is saponified and the fatty acids isolated. These are then esterified with a large excess of anhydrous glycerine at 180 DEG C., using potassium soap as catalyst.
