Abstract

455,252. Carpet sweepers. WAGNER MFG. CO., E. R., 4611, 32nd Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. March 15, 1935, No. 25690. Convention date, March 22, 1934. Divided out of 441,175. [Class 138 (i)] A carpet sweeper of the type comprising a wheeled casing containing a central rotary brush is characterized bv the method of mounting the handle and by the springing. The casing 1, Fig. 1, has lateral plates 62 and extensions 2, 3 with slots 15 in between, the arms 14 of the handle 12 extending therethrough. Bosses 70 are provided on the plates for releasably retaining the handle substantially parallel with the casing and other bosses 69 for retaining the handle vertically. The handle is snapped into or out of position past the bosses. The bosses 69, when engaged with arms 14 of the handle in either operative position, tend to exert a stabilizing action against rocking at the end of a stroke. The driving wheels are mounted on springs 60, Fig. 3, clamped to the casing by members 61 preferably part of the plate 62. The ends of the springs engage flattened portions 4<1>, Fig. 5, of the wheel axles 4 to prevent rotation and consequent collection of dust. To prevent rubbing of the springs on the casing felt and fibre washers are interposed. The connection of the handle 12 and bail member 13 comprises stamping out the member 13 to provide a key 71, Fig. 8. An attaching lug 72, Fig. 7, with a transverse opening 73 is slipped over the bail and brought to such a position that the key 71 is located therein. The lug is then smoothed down to close round the key 71. Specification 441,175 is referred to.
