Abstract
Halogenated phenanthrolines are prepared by subjecting halogenated phenylene diamines or halogenated amino-quinolines to a Skraup synthesis. The amino compounds may be wholly or partly acylated or replaced by the corresponding azo compounds. Examples describe the preparation of (1) 5-chloro-m-phenanthroline from 4 - chlor - m - phenylenediamine; (2) 5-bromo-m-phenanthroline from 4 - bromo-m-phenylene-diamine or 4 - bromo-diacetyl-m-phenylenediamine; (3) Bz-bromo-p-phenanthroline from 2-bromo-p-phenylene-diamine, or its 1-acetyl, diacetyl or 1-benzoyl derivatives; (4) Bz-bromo-o-phenanthroline from 4 - bromo - o - phenylene - diamine or its 1-acetyl, diacetyl or 1-benzoyl derivatives; (5) 5 - bromo-m-phenanthroline from 5-amino-8-bromo - quinoline or 5 - benzazo - 8 - bromo-quinoline. 4-Bromo-diacetyl-m-phenylene-diamine and the 1-acetyl, diacetyl, and 1-benzoyl derivatives of 2-bromo-p-phenylenediamine and 4-bromo-o-phenylenediamine are made by brominating the acylated diamines in glacial acetic acid. 5-Benzazo-8-bromo-quinoline is made from 5-benzazo-8-hydroxy-quinoline.
