Abstract
454,267. Fluid - pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., and EDGE, S. H., Titanic Works, Lincoln. March 28, 1935, No. 9717. [Class 103 (i)] [See also Group XXIX] Fluid-pressure brake mechanism comprises a two. armed lever moun. ted on a rocking arm of the brake transmission, one arm of the lever carrying the pedal and the other being connected, at a point in or near the axis of the rocking arm, to the control valve which is of the " reaction " type. The pedal lever 1 is pivoted at 2 on a shaft connecting arms 3 secured to the shaft 4 which carries arms 5 connected to the brakes. A boss 7 surrounding the shaft 4 is connected by rod 11 to the valve 8. This valve is of the type in which the fluid pressure or suction which is brought into action by the movement of the valve-operating member reacts on that member tending to restore the member to the " off " position and may be such as described in Specification 346,329. A brake operating cylinder 9 is connected to an arm 10 on the shaft 4. When the pedal is depressed the lever 1 turns on its fulcrum 2, thus actuating the valve 8 and the vacuum in cylinder 9 reacts through the rod 11 on the pedal. Also the pedal and arms 3 rock together with the shaft 4 so that the pedal movement is substantially proportional to the degree of application of the brakes. In the event of failure of the fluid pressure, the brakes can be actuated directly after engagement of the boss 7 with the shaft 4. The system may be of the vacuum type as shown or it may be of the pneumatic or hydraulic pressure type. In a modification, the pedal 1 is pivoted at one end of a lever such as 5 to which end also the cylinder 9 is connected while the brakes are connected to the other end and in a further modification, the lever 1 and a brake connection are connected to one end of a lever such as 5 and the cylinder 9 to the other end of this lever.
