[Class 36] A power cable sys. tem comprises one or more conductors 2, 3, 4 insulated with rubber, guttapercha or the like 5 and submerged in water 7 in a pipe 1 of large crosssection relative tc that of the insulated conductor or conduc. tors, the water being maintained under a pressure sufficiently high materially to increase the dielectric strength of the conductor insulation. Salt, carbon dust or graphite may be added to the water to decrease its resistance. A protective covering 6 of rubber frictioned fabric tape or fibrous braid or a coating of an abrasion-resistant compound or of a conducting rubber compound, may be applied over the insulation 5 ; a shielding tape may be interposed between the insulation 5 and covering 6. The system also comprises a water supply, pump and relief valves ; the latter may be set so as to constantly discharge to cause circulation of the water through the system. Stop or semi-stop joints may also be utilized. The water and pipe line may form the return circuit of the system.
