Abstract

453,501. Valve modulating circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London, and DITCHAM, W. T., Almont, Baddow Road, Chelmsford. March 11, 1935, No. 7570. [Class 40 (v)] A valve modulating circuit comprises a wave amplifier 1 and a signal amplifier 2 connected in series across a divided H.T. supply 22, 23, and an impedance 26 is interposed between the junction of the supply sources and the junction of the valves. High-frequency chokes 5, 24 are interposed in each supply lead to the wave amplifier 1. The signal is applied to the grid of the amplifier 2 through a transformer 12 and condenser 13, and the negative grid bias of this valve is reduced as the signal strength increases by rectification of the signal in a full-wave rectifier 19 of which the load resistance 17 is in the grid circuit of the valve 2. In this way power consumption in the valve 2 is reduced when the signal is of low intensity. As the valve 2 operates on a straight part of its characteristic, the mean carrier amplitude does not vary with the signal strength.
