Abstract

In producing sulphur dioxide by burning gases containing a fluctuating proportion of sulphuretted hydrogen, carbon bisulphide is burnt in conjunction with the hydrogen sulphide-containing gases in a proportion sufficient to maintain the output of sulphur dioxide and to ensure continued combustion. When burning the gases containing hydrogen sulphide leaving an ammonium sulphate saturator, a packed tower capable of being heated is provided in the path of the gases between the saturator and the burner. Benzole forerunnings containing carbon bisulphide are trickled down the tower in a quantity determined by their carbon bisulphide content and the proportion of sulphur to be added to the gases. The sulphur dioxide may be converted to sulphuric acid by the contact process.
