Abstract
452,306. Wells. SHAFFER, W. D., and SCHWEITZER, F. J., Brea, California, U.S.A. March 9, 1935, No. 7460. [Class 85] A control gate or blow-out preventer for wells comprises a shell S with a vertical hole H for passage of pipe &c. T and a bearing surface 11 around the hole, and opposed rams 8, with lower flanges 7 below semicircular pockets, are movable in the shell as by opposite screws 12 ; rubber &c. packings 16 seat against the vertical walls of the pockets, while floating cages comprising upper and lower segments 2, 2<a> connected by spaced ribs 2b, are slidably supported on the flanges 7 and are filled with a rubber core C. The core has radial lugs C<1> abutting against the ends of the packings 16. A bead 2<c> and a recess 7<c> limit play of the cages and the ends of the flanges 2 have interlocking parts 20, while the inward projection of the flanges 2, 2<a> is sufficient for engagement with collars on the pipe T. On closing the rams, the cores C, which may be harder than the packing 16, extrude the latter against the surface 11. Specification 366,132 is referred to.
