Abstract
451,622. Coated fabrics. INTERNATIONAL LATEX PROCESSES, Ltd., 10, Lefebvre Street, St. Peter Port, Guernsey, and MADGE, E. W., and TAYLOR, S. D., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. April 4, 1935, No. 10419. [Class 140] A fabric is provided with a waterproof coating or coatings of rubber &c. by applying to the fabric latex froths or foams which easily break on shear or contact with a coagulant, destroying the frothy or foaming character of the dispersion while regulating the thickness thereof and setting the non-frothy or non-foaming layer of dispersion so produced. Suitable froths or foams may be produced by using wetting agents, e.g. salts of sulphated fatty alcohols, condensation products of isethionic acid or its salts and oleic acid or its derivatives or sulphonated oils ; or by using restricted quantities of usual soap-type frothing agents or mixings of lower solid content. The fabric may include spun and woven material, parallel cords, carded and felted materials. Dispersions of rubber, guttapercha, balata, &c. in vulcanized or unvulcanized condition may be employed, including coagulated rubber, vulcanized rubber, synthetic rubber, waste or reclaim. Concentrates such as described in Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70], may be employed In an example, a carded cotton web is fed into the nip of a pair of coagulant licked rollers as described in Specification 416,077, the coagulant being 10 per cent acetic acid, and into the nip is fed a latex foam formed by beating until its volume is increased fourfold a specified latex mixing containing an oleic-isethionic acid condensation product. In a further example, a similar froth is applied by a spreading process, the froth being broken by passage under a doctor blade, and set or coagulated by drying or by contact with a coagulant licked surface.
