[Class 135] A valve for controlling the flow in water pipes comprises two fixed aligned pipe sections 3, 18, the space between which is bridged by a valve member in the form of an axially displaceable tube 1 extending at one end into a ported cylindrical grid member 4, with an unobstructed through passage, mounted axially in the pipe section 3, and closed at its inner end by a cap 5, against which the end of the tube 1 adjacent the grid 4 seats to form an additional seal against leakage, when the ports in the grid are closed. Both sides of the cap 5 are of stream-lined or conical form. The valve 1 may be controlled by means connected thereto at flanges 12. Such connection is accessible through spaces between distance pieces 15 connected to flanged members 10, 14 on the ends of the pipe sections. Both flanged members have stuffing boxes 11, 16 and the member 10 supports the grid member 4. The ports 19 of the latter are graduated in length so that reduction in flow is more gradual as the tube approaches the seat 6 on the cap 5. The pipe 18 which is usually though not necessarily, the valve outlet is flared to reduce the velocity of the water after passing the valve. According to the Provisional Specification, the valve may be operated by the automatic control mechanism described in Specification 441,924.
