Abstract

451,173. Connecting rods. MAINA, J., 35, Maybury Mansions, Marylebone Street, London. Jan. 23, 1935, No. 16199/36. Divided out of 450,846. [Class 122 (i)] In a, crank-shaft and connecting-rod connection wherein a pair of connecting-rods are mounted upon a common crank-pin for operating in the same plane and with the big-end of one rod fitting in the bifurcated big-end of the other rod, the crank is integral at both ends with the supporting crank arms, but is divided at an intermediate point to facilitate assembly. The crank-case 1 has circular ribs 2 in which fit rings 3 constituting the outer races of rollerbearings 4. The crank-shaft comprises sections 8, 81 ... 8<4>. Sections 8, 8<4> are half-cranks ; sections 81, 8<2>, 8<3> constitute one half each of two adjacent cranks. The sections are connected by tongues and grooves and secured by bolts. Connecting-rod 22 has a big end 15, the inner surface of which forms the outer race of a roller bearing 14, the inner race of which is constituted by a cylindrical member 13 which engages the crank-pin. The second rod has the big end 19 bifurcated to permit the passage of rod 22. The sides 18 of the outer big ends 19 form the outer races of bearings 17, the inner races of which are constituted by the composite crank which is grooved at 16. In Fig. 3, the crank-shaft is lightened by removing portions 23, 25. This permits spray-lubrication by oil ducts 24 ... 27. In a further modification, the end 19 only is a ball or roller bearing ; the end 15 engages the outer surface of the outer race.
