Abstract
450,972. Swash-plate linkages. WATTS, R. E., 30, Tinwell Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Jan. 25, 1935, No. 2516. [Class 80 (iii)] Means for producing rotary from reciprocating motion and vice versa, comprise the combination of a reciprocating member rotatable about an axis lying in the direction of reciprocation, a longitudinally fixed member rotatable about a parallel axis at a fixed distance from the first axis, and a connecting member of variable effective length rotatable at one end about an axis inclined to the axis of the reciprocating member and fixed relatively to that member and, at its other end, about an axis correspondingly inclined and fixed relatively to the longitudinally fixed member. As applied to an engine, pump or compressor, pairs of pistons 1 reciprocate along axes parallel to that of a crank-shaft 3 about which the cylinders are arranged. The crank-shaft has an inclined crank-pin 11 parallel with which are pins 5 rigidly secured in an inclined position in each pair of pistons. A disc 9 is rotatably mounted on the crank-pin 11 and is connected through pins 8 and links 7 to the pins 5. The linkage 7, 8, 9 therefore constitutes a member of variable effective length connecting the crankpin, which is fixed against longitudinal movement, with the reciprocating and rotating pins 5. The member of variable length may be differently constructed and may, for example, comprise two levers pivotally connected at one end, the other ends being connected to the inclined pin of the piston and the inclined crank-pin respectively.
