[Class 18] In a case for lipstick, &c. of the type comprising a slidable carrier 8, engaging a pinion 7 which, in turn, engages a rack 14 movement of which permits the opening or closing of a rigid, hinged lid 18, a spring or springs 21<1> act on the rack to eliminate backlash between the latter and the pinion. The carrier is cylindrical and provided with lateral flanges to keep it in position, and it is pushed up or down by means of a knob 17 which slides in slots 2, 4 in the outer casing 1 and an inner tubular member 3 respectively. A portion of the back of the carrier is bent inwardly and formed as a rack 10 which engages the pinion 7, the latter being pivoted on a flange to a plate 5 positioned between the casing 1 and tube 3. The rack 14 is formed on a plate 13 the upper end of which engages the back edge of the cover to prevent it opening, but when the rack is drawn downwards, the cover is released and flies open under the action of a spring coiled on its hinge pin. The spring on, the cover hinge may be replaced by a long, flexible member pressing on lugs on the cover at the hinge. The case is covered by a flanged, apertured plate 17<1>. The slots 2, 4 are obturated by a spring-pressed plate which is pushed aside by the knob 17. In a modification, the cover is hinged to the top of plate 13 so that as the plate moves downwards, the cover pivots and is withdrawn into the casing. A spring on the hinge of the cover tends to close it when it is exposed. In this modification, the top of plate 13 may be bifurcated and provided with vertical strengthening ribs.
