Abstract

450,538. Ventilation system and apparatus. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and SAINTY, C. L., 24, Bucking- ham Gate, London. Dec. 18, 1934, No. 36354. [Class 137] A building is ventilated by being divided into zones according to natural thermal exposure (solar radiation or cold winds), and conditioned air is supplied independently to each zone, or group of rooms from a central plant under the control of means sensitive to the condition of the air in the respective zones or groups of rooms. An air conditioning plant comprising a spray de-humidifier 3, and fan 4, supplies conditioned air to a large diameter duct II having a damper 17 and branches 13, 13<a>, each leading to a different group of rooms III. The pressure in the duct II may be maintained constant by automatic means described in Specification 344,914 or 418,748. A fan 8 supplies a mixture of conditioned air from pipe 13, and recirculated air from pipe 12 to a tapered duct 9 having branches 10 leading to each room 6. The return air passes by outlets 10<1> into a corridor 11 from which pipe 12 leads. A thermostat 16 in the middle room of a group controls valves 14, 15 in the conditioned and recirculated air pipes respectively to vary the cooling effect of the air supplied to the rooms according to the room temperature. In the winter, the rooms have heating means such as radiators, and the heat-supply is varied according to the variation of heating due to the sun's rays, preferably by the thermostat 16, which also operates in the case of infiltration of cold air from the east or north. A heater may be associated with the volume controls 14 and 15 to heat the air supplied to the rooms in accordance with the thermostat 16, the proportion of air from the central air conditioning plant being increased when the room temperature falls. If the room temperature becomes too low to be restored by cutting down the conditioned air supply, the heater comes into operation.
