Abstract

A freely flowing gelatinous suspension comprises a liquid pretroleum &c. hydrocarbon in which a predetermined amount of carnauba wax, gelled with the same kind of oil, is dispersed to form a mobile discontinuous mass. The suspension forms a vehicle for stably suspending lubricating &c. particles, e.g. graphite, talc, sulphur, lead. The carnauba wax is dissolved by heating and a gel is formed by cooling, with or without agitation, after which the gel is broken into small particles by agitation, e.g. by stirring or by passing the mixture through an orifice. A stable suspension is obtained by using sufficient wax to avoid formation of serum layer, on standing, or by decanting such serum layer. A plasticizer in the nature of a wax solvent may be added. In an example carnauba wax is dissolved in 1\ba1/2\be times its weight of petroleum oil by heat and the wax content is reduced to 9 per cent by adding further oil and stirring, after which 5 per cent flowers of sulphur is added and the mixture freed through an orifice to yield a lubricant intended to be diluted with further oil for use.
