Abstract

Non-caking materials for use in fluorescent screens for cathode-ray tubes or for transmitting or intensifying screens for X-ray work consist of zinc sulphide, cadmium sulphide, zinc-cadmium sulphide, or zinc-cadmium-manganese sulphide prepared by coating the grains of the material as a result of a washing operation with an amorphous or fine crystalline deposit of aluminium hydroxide, zinc sulphide, zinc oxide, or zinc oxychloride. The fluorescent material may be washed with a solution of an aluminium salt and then with ammonia solution or first with a solution of a zinc salt, e.g. zinc chloride, and then with water forming zinc oxychloride or with sulphuretted hydrogen water forming zinc sulphide. The deposition may be carried out before or after the usual heating process but if the deposit is formed before heating, care must be taken to avoid volatilization during heating. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of other deposited substances especially alkaline earth carbonates and coloured substances, the colour influencing the final colour of the screen emission. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
