Abstract
449,019. Bundling-machines. BUNN CO., B. H., 7605, Vincennes Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Dec. 17, 1934, No. 36132. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1933. [Class 94 (i)] Relates to a bundling and tying machine for applying and tying twine round a bundle. The machine is so arranged that the bundle can be turned manually through an angle after the twine has been applied round it once, and the twine is then applied twice round at an angle to the previous application and knotted. The longitudinal application is preferably made first to ensure more accurate centring of the twine. The machine is in some respects similar to those described in Specification 146,525, [Class 94 (i)], and U.S.A. Specification 1,606,290. The bundle B, Fig. 6, is placed longitudinally over a gap between a fixed table 84 and a table 98 pivoted for limited movement to a shaft 86 carrying the twine applying arm 92. The twine passes from a supply and tension device through the hollow centre of the shaft 86 and through eyes 93, 931 to a twine catcher 123, Fig. 5. To start the machine, a treadle is depressed, and through links 111,112, 115, 60 clutches the shaft 56, Fig. 1, to the main drive 52 through a clutch 57 and gears 54, 55. The shaft 56 drives through gears 61, 62, a shaft 63, which rotates through 90‹ before a cam N108, Fig. 5, engages a roller on the arm 115 and throws out the clutch 57. The gear 62 is complete on the right edge, Fig. 1, and has an arcuate mutilation 62<1> on the left. The mutilated portion is aligned with a pinion 85, Figs. 1 and 4, having rollers 105 which bear on the portion 621 during that portion of the revolution of the gear 62 when the pinion 85 is not engaged. When the pinion is engaged, it drives, through sprockets N10, N12, and a chain N11, the shaft 86 carrying the twine applying arm. During the initial quarter revolution, the pinion is engaged and the arm is given a complete rotation to carry the twine once completely round the bundle. An arm N16 is pivoted to the arm 92 and is normally held at right angles thereto by a spring N17. The twine passes through an eye in the end of the arm N16 and, when the application to the bundle commences, the arm is drawn into parallelism with the arm 92 by the tension, and can automatically take up slack. The bundle is manually turned to a transverse position, and the treadle is depressed again to allow the shaft 63 to rotate through 270‹ before the cam block 108 again declutches the drive. During the first part of this rotation, the arm 92 is caused to apply the twine twice completely round the bundle transversely, after which the mutilated portion 62<1> of the gear 62 comes opposite the pinion 85 and engages rollers 105 thereon to stop further rotation of the shaft 86. During this pause the knotting operation is carried out by the knotters 159, 160 as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,606,290. The twine is severed and the apparatus is ready for the next cycle. The gear ratios between the sprockets N10, N12, and the angle between the cam blocks 108, N108 may be varied to allow the twine to be applied a different number of times for the initial or final applications.
