Dec. 12, 1934, No. 35721. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Groups XL and XXXVI] Discharge lamps for street lighting, &c. starting with a glow discharge and operating with a constricted arc arc operated at two different light outputs and currents from the same source by meams of a scrips reactance consisting of two coils A, B on the outer limbs of a three-limbed coro having an air gap D in each limb, the coils being connected in parallel for the higher current and one coil A being open-circuited by a switch E for the lower current. The switch E may be controlled by a timing device or relay and operated automatically or by remote control. The lamp may be designed so that its voltage drop at both current densities is approximately two-thirds of the voltage of the source. The Provisional Specification describes also the control of current to the lamp by a tapped choke with quick-acting switches designed to avoid momentary open or short circuits, by two separate chokes one shorted for the higher current or by connecting the lamp in the primary circuit of a transformer whilst the secondary is opened or closed by a switch.
