Abstract

447,959. Rotary engines. HUTCHISON, M. R., Box 44, Madison, New Jersey, U.S.A. Oct. 23, 1935, No. 29227. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1934. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary engine or pump comprises a lobed rotor 9 and a two-armed rocking abutment 10 pivoted at 39 to a pin extending eccentrically from a bearing 40 which may be rotated through an external screw cut, to adjust the abutment so that both arms 12 continually contact with the rotor. Inlet and outlet ports 25, 27 permit fluid to pass through spaces 31 and 29. The backs of the arm 12 may be hollowed out for lightening purposes. Fig. 6 shows a vane 34 formed on the back of the rocker which, it is stated, helps to maintain a non-pulsating flow of fluid through the working chamber and also acts as a counter-balance for the abutment. A passage 44 may be provided to admit lubricating and sealing oil from a well 50 which is under pressure of delivery fluid, when the apparatus is used as a pump. The well 22 contains lubricant which is splashed about the working chamber by the rotor. A clearance may be provided between the rotor and the abutment, and the latter rocked by external cam gear. The abutment may be of bi-metallic construction to compensate for heat expansions. Where liquids are being pumped the ports 25, 27, extend into the space 29 so that no liquid is compressed within this space. More than one vane 34 may be arranged on the back of the abutment. Fluid under pressure may be admitted to the back of the abutment for balancing purposes.
