Abstract

447,852. Brakes. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S., King's Road, Tyseley, Birmingham. March 13, 1935, No. 7742. Addition to 428,637. [Class 103 (i)] The brake-shoe actuating mechanism described in the parent Specification is modified by the substitution of balls for the rollers comprised in that mechanism. A plunger g slidable in a direction at right angles to the plane of the shoes a, b, in a housing e secured to the back plate of the brake contains in a bore j, balls k which contact each other and inclined grooves l in tappets m slidable in the housing in the plane of the shoes. The ends of the tappets engage plates n on the webs of the shoes and the tappets are cut away to provide slots p which receive the ends of the shoe webs and permit these ends normally to engage the housing. Outward movement of the plunger by a cable attached to it separates the tappets to apply the brake, the friction being substantially only rolling friction. In the case of a self-energizing brake the braking load is taken by the housing e.
