Abstract

Alkali metal polyphosphates are obtained by calcining substantially neutral mixtures of alkali metal orthophosphates or constituents adapted to produce such mixtures at temperatures between 300 and 500 DEG C. As initial materials, sodium sesqui-phosphate obtained by mixing mono- and di-sodium phosphates, or trisodium phosphate and the necessary amount of phosphoric acid, or phosphoric acid and the necessary amount of sodium carbonate may be used. The double salt of sodium fluoride and trisodium phosphate may be used in place of trisodium phosphate. The products are useful as washing, detergent, and softening agents, and for dissolving calcareous incrustations in boilers, and may be used alone or together with known detergents.ALSO:Alkali metal polyphosphates, alone or in association with known detergents, may be used for softening water.
