Abstract

447,455. Supply systems for discharge tubes and arcs. FERRANTI, Ltd., Hollinwood, Lancashire.-(Ferranti Electric, Ltd. ; Mount Dennis, Toronto, Canada) June 20, 1935, No. 17703. [Class 38 (iv)] A load device having a negative impedance characteristic such as a discharge tube or arc is connected to an A.C. supply source through a stabilizing inductance, a load device of similar characteristic being connected to the same supply through a stabilizing capacity so that the total load taken from the supply has a high power factor. A discharge tube 5 may be supplied through a transformer 3, 6, stabilizing inductance being provided by the inherent reactance of the winding 6. The additional load device 7 is connected to an auxiliary winding 4 through a condenser 1 and an inductance 8 may be added either, separately or in the inductance of the winding 4. The ratings of the loads 5 and 7 are similar so that their wattless currents balance out. If the voltage required by the load is different from that of the condenser, it may be coupled to the condenser circuit through a further transformer, the primary of which is in series in the condenser circuit. Alternatively, the two circuits may be connected to two secondary windings 4, 6, Fig. 4, on the transformer, one of the secondaries 6 being in series with a part of the other. The load devices may be connected separately and directly to the supply mains or through separate transformers, each load circuit incorporating capacity or inductance stabilizing means and the resultant power factor being arranged to be high.
