Abstract
Artificial silk, fibres, films, ribbons, and other materials are obtained by projecting cuprammonium cellulose solutions into an aqueous weak coagulating agent containing dissolved therein a small quantity of a phosphoric acid or a water-soluble salt thereof, i.e. up to about 0,3 or 0,5 grams per litre respectively and completing the coagulation in a subsequent bath. The process is applicable to stretch-spinning processes where the extruded thread is drawn out in the weak coagulating agent and then hardened in an acid bath. Ortho-, meta-, and pyro-phosphoric acids or their water-soluble salts may be employed. The aqueous precipitating bath may also contain sodium chloride, sulphate, or bicarbonate, or carbonic acid. In examples, artificial silk is obtained from cuprammonium cellulose solutions by stretch-spinning in water containing small quantities of phosphoric acid, or disodium o-phosphate, or trisodium o-phosphate together with sodium bicarbonate, sodium sulphate, and carbon dioxide, coagulation being completed by treatment of the threads with sulphuric acid solution. The Provisional Specification describes also the application of the process to the production of artificial silk and other materials from viscose.
