Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 28, 1935]. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] The screen of a cathode-ray tube for television &c. reception comprises a substance having optical characteristics varied by the cathode-ray to control radiation from a local source and so produce the picture. Light from an arc lamp 9 and filter 13 passes successively through a condenser 10, the screen 8 and an objective 11 before reaching the viewing screen 12. The screen 8 is of, or prepared with, phosphorus and absorbs light according to the intensity of the scanning cathode-ray 7. In a modification, the lamp 9 is a source of ultra-violet rays and the screen 12 is fluorescent. In other modifications, the refractive index of the screen 8, which may be a mica sheet, is varied by heating due to the ray 7 and these variations are converted into the picture by the Toepler- Schlieren method or by inserting the screen 8 between crossed Nicol prisms.
