Abstract

Petroleum lubricating-oils containing no or not more than 0,5 per cent of paraffin wax are refined by sulphuric acid at below -2 DEG C. Fuller's earth treatment may follow. Suitably, 6--30 per cent. of acid is used, and the oil is thinned by a hydrocarbon solvent. Example: Lubricating oil distillate is diluted with 1,5 vol. of petroleum, freed from all but 0,5 per cent of wax, treated at -10 DEG C., with 14 per cent of concentrated acid, and settled for 6--7 hr. at -10 DEG C.; the upper layer is withdrawn, treated with 0,4 per cent of fuller's earth, and freed from diluent.
